Leading up to Hecla Village enjoy the scenic drive alone the shoreline. The drive offers picture perfect views of lake Winnipeg with Black Island to the east as a backdrop. Often, fishing boats and barges can be seen on the on the water while Hecla’s airforce, a squadron of white pelicans, passes overhead. During spring and fall migration Canada geese are common on the fields; in October, 50 - 75 bald eagles can be seen while driving along the lakeshore. Hecla Village is the showpiece of this picturesque route so be sure to stop for a visit. Village tour - There is a self guiding village tour which starts at the dock and is about 1 KM in distance. It depicts the history of the Hecla Island settlement. There are brochures available by the back door, also check the bulletin board to see when the guided village walks take place. These are guided by park interpreters and you will be able to ask them questions. Buildings are open daily in the summer or by request, for tours call 279-2056 or in off season call 378-2261. |

Grassy Narrows Marsh Trail - over 25 km’s of Hiking/Cycling trails. Five different trails ranging from .6km to 10.2km. Black Wolf Trail - a 19 km trail appropriate for hiking or cycling, through some of the most diverse and unspoiled areas of Hecla Island. West Quarry Trail: 10 km return. Remnants of a blacksmith shop, log cabin, old tug, fishing camp and limestone quarry. Viewing blind, warming hut, interpretive signs about moose. Lighthouse Trail: 3 km. Crushed stone pathway by the lighthouse. Provides excellent view of Hecla shoreline and neighbouring Black Island. Harbour Trail: 5.5 km. Follows lake shore around North point of Island though the forest, by limestone cliffs, sunset beach and north point picnic area. Excellent view of other islands. Lagoon fitness Trail: 2.3 km. Pathway with a series of fitness activity stations. Hecla Village Self-Guiding Trail: Depicts the history of Hecla Island settlement, brochures available at trailhead, guided tours available. As soon as you cross the bridge on the causeway entering the park look for signs on the right hand side of the road for Grassy Narrows Marsh and exit on the access road to the parking area. Here you will find a rehabilitated and managed marsh with dykes developed by Ducks Unlimited. There are trails and boardwalks with interpretive signs, scopes, towers, and blinds. You can cycle or hike to explore the 25kms of trails in the marsh. Check the interpretive kiosk for brochures of trails and boardwalks. |

Just inside the park entrance this 20 min return trail leads to a viewing tower, several on-sight signs describing Moose biology and a spotting scope for close observation of prime moose habitat and with a little luck --- Moose. |
